In all the time I have been here, I have never participated in a week of tastings that has been better received by our staff. 2012 Martinelli ‘Jackass Hill’ Zinfandel, Russian River Valley

This Zinfandel from Jackass Hill Vineyard is made from 106-year-old, head-pruned, dry-farmed vineyards planted on one of the steepest slopes in Sonoma. This rugged section of the ranch is referred to by the Martinelli family as “Jackass Hill”, because only a jackass would farm a hill that steep. Jackass Hill is the steepest non-terraced hillside vineyard in Sonoma County. This Zinfandel is seriously full-bodied, showing notes of creme de cassis and dark berries combined with black peppery spice and anise flavors.

Wine Spectrum 97,  Stephen Tanzer 96: Bright ruby-red.  Highly perfumed aromas of black and blue fruits, apricot, potpourri and woodsmoke, with a sexy Asian spice nuance adding complexity.  Juicy, penetrating blueberry and mulberry flavors show outstanding depth, with a spine of zesty minerality providing lift.  Offers a compelling blend of richness, weight and vivacity and finishes with superb clarity, power and spicy persistence.  I suspect that this hugely concentrated wine will age along a slow, steady, very long curve.

2012 Martinelli ‘Lolita Ranch’ Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

Wine Spectrum 96+: Classic aromas of cola, carob, earth and raspberry. On the palate, there is a nice tart cranberry and strawberry fruit profile. The finish is full of bright red fruits, and exotic notes of pineapple and currant. A very forward and generous wine. 247 cases produced.

2012 Martinelli ‘Moonshine Ranch’ Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

Wine Spectrum 96: The 2012 Moonshine Ranch Pinot Noir from Russian River is chocked full of flower stalks, mushrooms, cherry cola/rootbeer aromas. Lots of cola (a hallmark characteristic of of this vineyard) on the palate with bright cherry, tea leaf, and fleshiness in the mouth. The finish is bright and tasty with plenty of richness. The 2012 vintage is less ripe than both the 2010 and 2011 vintages, and by all accounts is a very full-bodied, yet balanced, wine. 558 cases produced.

2012 Martinelli ‘Vellutini Ranch’ ZInfandel, Russian River Valley

Wine Spectrum 96: Perfumed blackberries and milk chocolate with hints of graphite and cream characterize the nose of the 2012 Vellutini Ranch Zinfandel. On the palate, the wine is plush, with blue fruits and carob, and loaded with exotic flavors. It is powerful and is on track to match the excellent quality of the 2007 Vellutini Zinfandel. Just 358 cases produced.

2008 Martinelli ‘Hop Camp’ Gravel Lens Syrah, Russian River Valley

Wine Spectrum 96: Explosive aromas of olive tapenade, bacon and dark cherry compote jump out of the glass. Flavors of roasted meats, green olives, cassis and chocolate covered cherries intermingle on the palate. Beautiful balance with a long finish and soft tannins make this one of the tastiest Syrahs from the Russian River, perhaps all of California. This is definitely a wine not to miss!

2012 Martinelli Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

Wine Spectrum 95+: Incredible nose of forest floor, raspberries, cedar, cola, crisp apples, and notes of ripe cherries. Just gorgeous! On the palate it is lush, full of plums, cherries, framboise liquer, and spicy earth. A wonderful texture and balance. The finish is long, generous and loaded with a bright mix of red and blue fruits. An extraordinary value! 100% Blue Slide Vineyard fruit.

2012 Martinelli ‘Lolita Ranch’ Zinfandel, Russian River Valley

Wine Spectrum 95: Red fruits, rose petals, potpourri notes, hints of earth, spice and cola. A very nice texture with layers of berries, sweet strawberries, currants, passionfruit and guava. 364 cases produced.

2010 Omerta ‘il consiglieri’ Proprietary, Red Napa Valley

Wine Spectrum 94: The 2010 ‘il consiglieri’ is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit for this wine comes from some of the most sought after vineyards in the valley, including those that are part of the 2008 Reserve Blend. Hints of vanilla bean and caramel linger on the nose, along with aromas of candied, jammy red fruits. Bright fresh cherries, red plums and black raspberries come through on the palate and are well integrated with flavors of dusty cocoa, spice and a touch of brambly, toasted oak. This is a mouthwatering wine that is smooth and supple with soft tannins and a medium-long finish. About 100 cases produced. Learn more about winemaker Bridget Raymond.

2008 Omerta ‘Reserve’ Proprietary Red, Napa Valley

Wine Spectrum 95: ‘Omerta’ is the word for an extreme form of loyalty and solidarity, and is the definition of the Italian code of silence. Winemaker Bridget Raymond has always kept the blend of this wine a secret, changing it slightly from year to year. The 2008 Omerta has enticing notes of dark cherry and chocolate It is a very full bodied wine, with a very supple mid-palate, and is seamless from start to finish. This wine was aged for 31 months in 100% French oak barrels, bottled unfiltered. After 20 minutes of decanting the fruit comes through in the aroma more each minute.  Although the ultimate composition remains a secret, the 2008 vintage is approximately 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with elements of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec rounding out the blend. 125 cases produced. Learn more about winemaker Bridget Raymond.

2012 Titus ‘Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

 Wine Spectrum 94: Our eleventh vintage of Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon exudes the unique, rich varietal characters of our best estate Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Aromas of black cherry, red currant, and sweet red plum come across as being accompanied by sweet oak spices, dark chocolate, raw sugar, and violets. The aromas translate directly to the palate swim along with well integrated fine grain tannins. The complex flavors and mouth-feel lead way to a rewarding finish with anise and a slight hint of mint. The recommended drinking time for this wine is four to six years from vintage, with an hour of decanting prior to drinking.

2012 Titus Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Wine Spectrum 93: The 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a shimmering, deep purple and ruby color. The nose is alluring and complex with aromas of black cherry, passion fruit, tamarind, lychee, sweet powdered cocoa, mulling spice and notes of brown sugar and oak spice. The mouth-feel is soft, medium-bodied, and elegant with well integrated, fine grain tannins that give way to lush, juicy flavors of sweet pomegranate, ripe plum, and strawberry accompanied by chocolate, and anise in addition to the aromas that follow through to the palate. This wine is sure to be a crowd pleaser in any and all situations. Recommended drinking time is five to ten years from vintage.

2012 David Arthur ‘Meritaggio’ Proprietary Red, Napa Valley

Wine Spectrum 95: David Arthur’s 2012 Red Wine Meritaggio Estate is delightful. This dark ruby red wine blend is bright with aromas of brambly red fruits, baked cherry plum and cassis, then layers of earth tones of wild sage, bay leaf and tobacco. The palate is focused and concentrated in the middle palate layered with baked fruit cake, black tea and spicy pepper notes, with polished, fine-grain tannins on the finish. 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
