2013 Stolpman Sauvignon Blanc, Ballard Canyon – $22

Wine Spectrum Rated 92+: The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc is already open, aromatic, and smooth. Much of the smooth richness derives from Sashi allowing malic acid to convert to lactic acid, giving the wine richer textures. Ruben decided to pick early and caught the vines at their highest peak of energy. The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc possesses an electrifyingly pop of lemon that intermingles with wet stone, white blossom and fresh pear.

2011 Stolpman ‘L’Avion’ Roussanne, Ballard Canyon – $35

Wine Spectrum Rated 94: The 2011 exceeds our very high expectations for the opulent, nuanced “red wine drinker’s white wine”, the great tradition of age worthy L’Avion Roussanne. The new release drinks especially fresh and has evolved wonderfully over the year we’ve held it in bottle. What was mineral and oak dominated a year ago has transformed into honey suckle and sweet beeswax. The mid-palate weight and structure ensure the 2011 L’Avion’s longevity. If you have the patience, open a bottle in 3-4 years as it begins to truly shine.

2012 Stolpman ‘La Cuadrilla’ Red Blend, Ballard Canyon – $25

Wine Spectrum Rated 93: La Cuadrilla might be the ultimate testament to Sashi Moorman’s winemaking talent. He puts the vineyard crew’s training Cuadra together with several other lots, mixing the ingredients to hit a perfect balance. By coincidence, the blend of the 2012 vintage represents each varietal’s respective acreage planted on the vineyard: 60% Syrah, 20% Sangiovese, 15% Grenache, and 5% Petite Sirah. Being that the blend comes from the perfect, warm 2012 vintage, the wine is darker with fresh blue and black fruits abounding. It already is drinking great so raise a glass and toast “Salud!” to the crew! This year’s label is titled “courage and loyalty” in honor of the strength, fortitude, and dedication of our passionate full-time workers, La Cuadrilla.

2011 Stolpman ‘Hilltops Estate’ Syrah Ballard Canyon – $49

Tanzer Rated 94, Wine Spectrum Rated 94+: Ripe Plum, sangre-iron, with hints of oak; this wine reminds me that I am a carnivore.  Despite being rich and lavish, there is energy in this wine that makes me want to tear into some flesh.   This wine is going to be a big hit.  Forget being a carnivore, this wine makes me happy to be alive.  Excitement bursts through the dense core and beams out, almost with revelatory radiance.

Tanzer: Dark red-ruby.  Deeply pitched aromas of mocha, chocolate and wild herbs, with pungent cherry and raspberry fruit emerging only after considerable time in the glass.  Initially came across as even less fruity and more savory than the Originals, with a bit less early detail, but aeration brought a tactile, chewy texture and lovely floral lift.  The wine’s strong underlying energy gives the juicy, very long finish a light touch in spite of the wine’s powerful impression of solidity.  Lay this highly concentrated syrah down for more complexity.
