2013 Pio Cesare Nebbiolo

From Pio Cesare, the renowned Piedmont winery established in 1881, comes Oltre, a modern wine combining the native Barbera and Nebbiolo varietals of the region with Cabernet and Merlot. Oltre made its debut with the 2006 vintage and is the only blended wine from this family-owned producer. The grapes come from the family’s 130 acres of vineyards. The Pio Cesare family’s unique winemaking method stresses minimal intervention to produce wines of particularly supple flavor expression. A ceaseless devotion to the individuality of each of the region’s wines informs Pio Cesare’s choices in the cellar: shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection for barrel and large cask aging, and bottling schedules determined by the ideal structure of each wine. This allows Pio Cesare to craft wines of varying weight, ageability and drinkability as determined by the vineyard rather than market fashion. Year after year, the wines of Pio Cesare are recognized for their consistency and regional expression. Winemaking
“Oltre” is Italian for “in addition to.” In addition to the Barbera grape variety, this wine is produced with Nebbiolo and a small amount of Cabernet and Merlot grapes grown in our family-owned vineyards in the Barolo and Barbaresco areas. This is a modern, 100 percent estate-grown wine. This wine is aged for 30 months, 50 percent in new mid-toasted French oak barrels from Allier region and 50 percent in 20 to 50 hectoliter French casks.
