In marked contrast to the tannic 2015, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is a forward, charming version of this cuvée, boasting delicate floral aromas and ripe cherry and stone fruit flavors. Full-bodied and creamy in texture, it shows no hard edges but delivers plenty of charm and finesse for drinking over the next 10-12 years. It’s a classic blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah
EndFragmentWSI94+Aromas
WSI94+ Aromas of blackberry, red cherry and baking spices. Smooth, concentrated yet balanced; flavors of tart cherries, red plums and light licorice. Very long. Hand-harvested. Partially destemmed; fermented on indigenous yeasts in cement tank. Aged exclusively in older foudre. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Estate vineyards represent a perfect cross-section of Châteauneuf terroir, unique in its complexity and variety. The lieu-dits ‘Montalivet,’ ‘La Crau,’ ‘Blachieres,’ ‘Coste Froide,’ ‘Bois Seneseau,’ ‘Palestor,’ ‘Bois Dauphin,’ ‘Pied de Baud,’ ‘Les Bosquets,’ ‘Les Parrans’ and ‘Les Marines’ are found in the north/northeast of the appellation. Soils range from clay and sand to alluvial gravel and ‘galets roulés,’ the large quartz stones characteristic of Rhône Valley vineyards. 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre.
