VIN94: Rewa’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is impressive. Nothing really stands out; instead it is the wine’s balance that is just sensational. The track record is very short – it only goes back to 2015, but in 2017, the heat seems to have baked out some of the more aggressive aromatics and tannins this wine has shown in the past, especially in 2016. Seamless, opulent and beautifully ripe, the 2017 will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. Winemaker Celia Welch gave the 2017 22 months in French oak, about 75% new.
This wine was crafted entirely from the Rewa Estate in Coombsville, Napa Valley. The fruit was harvested before dawn, by hand, on October 2. It displays aromas of raspberry jam, blackberry, brambleberry, cocoa, cedar, anise and mint tea. On entry, the wine is ripe and expansive and continues this way through to the finish. It is dense and highly concentrated with a finish of fresh, juicy fruit notes. The tannins are present and approachable.
Each block was fermented separately, pressed, transferred to French oak barrels,
and kept as a discreet lot for approximately ten months. The wine was then blended
and returned to barrels for an additional year of aging in French oak.
The wine was bottled without fining or filtration on July 19, 2019.
