JD97 Named after the Blue Moon that they had on August 30th, 2023, the 2023 Pinot Noir Blue is a bright ruby hue and shines in this vintage, with a medium-bodied frame. It’s light on its feet and has notes of fruit punch, but it also has fantastic structure, with well-defined tannins and bright acidity. I love that it has such a joyful nature but also real structure, harkening to elegant Nebbiolo in terms of its texture, with a refined and earth-noted finish. Drink 2025-2045.
VIN95 The 2023 Pinot Noir Sequitur Blue is youthfully poised, with a dark bouquet of exotic spices and crushed violets complementing dried strawberries. Elegant and cool-toned in style, it offers crisp mineral notes and tart red and blue fruits that slowly saturate the palate. Fantastic concentration is matched by balance as a web of fine-grained tannins flexes upon the senses, leaving a nuance of licorice and a pleasantly bitter twang to linger. A radiant beauty.
Estate Notes: The 2023 Sequitur Pinot Noir wonderfully captures the vibrancy of this vintage. A wine of incredible potential, “Blue” will cellar for many, many years to come. In Michael’s words, the structure reminds him of Nebbiolo intertwined with the wire-taught tension of a fresh Côte de Nuits. We couldn’t agree more, and we’re eager to see how “Blue” evolves.
Harvested between September 10th through September 15th 2023. Fermented natively in a mix of closed and open top concrete fermenters. No whole cluster. After a handful of days of cold soak, the ferment was allowed to come up to temperature naturally, and managed by pump over daily with a handful of punch downs incorporated at the peak of fermentation activity. Gently pressed after 18 to 20 days on skins, settled at most for 24 hours, and barreled down to 35% new French oak. In barrel for 12 months, racked only once to stainless steel for 3 months, before being bottled in January 2025.
