WE90 Thick, reductive and tannic in intensity, this bold, flavorful wine is dense in black cherry, violet and lavender, with toasted oak and meaty garrigue in the background. It is blended with small amounts of Petite Sirah, Carignane and Alicante Bouschet, which contribute additional complexity and peppery seasoning
Estate Notes: The 2016 Sonoma Valley estate Grenache is an easy-to-love expression of the classic Mathis wine. The aromas of white pepper and strawberry jam are followed by intense Framboise liqueur flavors and an explosion of ripe red fruits. Structurally soft and approachable right out of the gate, the 2016 vintage has just the right amount of chalky tannins to ensure it’s a great food pairing wine.
Peter Mathis: a successful furniture maker in Massachussetts falls badly for wine, moves to California, works his way from winemaking to management at Ravenswood Winery – and that’s 25 years of history! Still madly in love with the wines from the South of France and trying to capture the deliciousness of Grenache from California vines!
Mathis Vineyard: 7.5 acres of heaven situated in the hills above the town of Sonoma, on a warm, south-facing slope. The soils are volcanic in origin, low vigor, with underlying rhyolitic rock. The nearby San Francisco Bay, visible from the vineyard, provides a cooling influence and allows for extended hang time at harvest.
