WA91-93 The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains saw 35% to 40% aging in oak, with the remainder in stainless steel. It has an almost Chassagne-like bouquet and already demonstrates impressive intensity with scents of almond and hazelnut that Benoît Droin attributes to the clay soils. The palate is well balanced, with a slightly viscous opening that recedes midway, leaving the second half with white citrus fruit and a touch of spice and nutmeg. I love the cohesion and the build of this Montmains and its crescendo on the finish. Recommended.
At the annual “Burgfest” blind tasting, the wines of Benoît Droin consistently impress, as will be revealed when I write up the 2014s later this year. This is one of the most consistent growers in Chablis and one of the earliest converts to DIAM closures. When I broached the topic, Benoît told me that when comparing aged bottles side by side, DIAMs perform better (he uses mainly DIAM 10 these days, for those of you who like to know these details).
VIN92 The 2016 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with quite intense aromas of white peach, yellow plum and struck flint, all very focused with good precision. The palate is very well balanced with greater depth and intensity than the Vaillons, veins of ginger and lemongrass, precise and nuanced on the finish. Excellent.
