The 2020 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc is our 36th vintage of this beautifully aromatic wine, and we are grateful for receiving consistent recognition as one of the New World’s great Sauvignons. Crafted with grapes from our Spottswoode Estate, as well as a handful of other iconic family-owned vineyards, this wine is energetic and sublime, with effortless poise and remarkable complexity that makes it both eminently drinkable and age-worthy.
The start of the 2020 growing season followed a warm, dry winter with little in the way of rain or cold weather until the end of March, providing a gentle entry into a summer showcased by very cool mornings and very warm days. While the growing conditions were ideal in 2020, wine country experienced two wildfires near the end of the season: the LNU Complex that started on August 17th, and the Glass Fire that started on September 26th. Thankfully, the Sauvignon Blanc from our Spottswoode Estate Vineyard and the grapes harvested from our grower vineyards were not impacted by smoke from the LNU fire, and the wine was happily fermenting in the various vessels and barrels inside the winery well before the Glass Fire started. While the 2020 harvest proved to be one of the most challenging in our history, our winemaking team remained not only optimistic, but committed to bottling wines of the highest quality, albeit in smaller quantities.
