Lebanon’s 7,000-Year Winemaking Legacy
Lebanon has been making wine for over 7,000 years. Long before the Phoenicians set sail and the Romans built temples to Bacchus in Baalbeck, winemaking was already deeply rooted in the fertile soil of the Beqaa Valley. Over time, this rich tradition ebbed and flowed, from the wine trade of the Venetians in the Middle Ages to the rebirth of Lebanon’s wine industry in the 19th century. Despite years of conflict, Lebanon’s winemaking legacy has never truly faded, with iconic wineries like Massaya bringing this storied past to the modern world.
Massaya: A Modern Lebanese Classic
Founded by the Ghosn brothers, Sami and Ramzi, after they returned to Lebanon in the early 1990s, Massaya began as an arak producer, later branching into wine production. Their chance encounter with Dominique Hebrard of Bordeaux’s Château Cheval Blanc set the stage for an exceptional partnership, one that would bring Massaya to the forefront of Lebanese winemaking. Today, Massaya is celebrated as one of the country’s most respected wineries, producing wines that capture both tradition and modernity.
