An Email from Bordeaux

Dear Sara,

I’m sitting in the Bordeaux–Mérignac airport, waiting for my flight home, and felt like I had to write to you.

When I first subscribed to the Wine Spectrum newsletter, I was mostly just looking for good everyday drinking wines. I thought it would be a good place to find more “under the radar” French wines. The stuff I didn’t see in the stores. I loved the emails. They were like little invitations into a smarter, more interesting corner of the wine world.

And then one day, I saw the button that said “Contact a Wine Advisor.” Clicking it was probably one of the best wine decisions I’ve ever made.

I had no idea then, but I was standing at the edge of something much deeper. You opened the door to another level entirely. Serious, collectible wines. Back-vintage allocations. Bottles with stories. Bottles with soul.

It’s been a thrilling ride ever since.

Every conversation with you has taught me something. Every shipment feels like an adventure. My cellar has grown not just in size, but in meaning.

And then came this trip to Bordeaux.

When I mentioned I was planning a trip, I could not have dreamt what was in store for me. You didn’t just suggest places to visit…you planned the whole damn thing. 

You got me into a Château I never could have booked on my own. You made dinner reservations that felt like insider secrets. That delicious bottle of Crémant de Bordeaux (I didn’t even know sparkling wine was made in Bordeaux!) that was waiting for me in my hotel room? I have a sneaking suspicion you had something to do with that.

And, that CAR! You told me you had a favorite chauffeur service, but come on! When I walked out of the hotel and saw a 1973 DS Limousine Convertible, I started looking around, expecting a celebrity sighting. It probably took me five minutes to realize it was there to pick me up. You should see the texts my friends sent back after I sent them selfies. Cruising around the vineyards in that car was 100% my movie star moment.

Now that the trip is coming to an end, I am simply overwhelmed by the entire experience. I can’t believe I was actually here, tasting in the places whose names once just lived on labels in my cellar.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. For helping me go from simply drinking wine…to living it.
