And then…🥂

In 1983, Champagne saw a modest, understated vintage — not widely declared, yet one that quietly rewarded those who took the risk. Among them was Krug, who chose to craft their fabled Clos du Mesnil from their one-hectare, walled Chardonnay vineyard in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. This rare monopole is revered for its precision and longevity, its chalky minerality and citrus purity carrying the unmistakable imprint of place. Even after decades, it remains luminous, poised, and utterly singular—a wine for moments that deserve to be remembered forever.

In 1990, Champagne enjoyed a truly exceptional harvest. Generous sunshine and near-perfect conditions produced wines of remarkable richness and balance. For those who recognized its potential, it was a vintage destined for greatness. Among them was Dom Pérignon, whose 1990 Dom Pérignon Vintage became an icon of opulence and finesse. Layered with toasted brioche, honeyed stone fruit, and a vibrant spine of acidity, it is a Champagne that speaks with both power and grace, offering a depth that only time can reveal.

In 1996, Champagne faced one of the most distinctive vintages in living memory. Intense ripeness and soaring acidity was a combination that puzzled some and thrilled others. Those who understood its rare balance of energy and concentration crafted wines built for the ages. Among them was Bollinger, whose 1996 La Grande Année captured the vintage’s electric tension. With its muscular structure, vibrant citrus, and deeply nutty complexity, it remains a benchmark for how boldly structured Champagne can evolve into something both powerful and profoundly elegant.

In 2002, Champagne experienced one of its most universally celebrated vintages. A perfect alignment of weather, ripeness, and balance allowed the region’s top houses to craft wines of both power and finesse. It was a year that rewarded precision, and Louis Roederer rose to the occasion with extraordinary clarity and poise. Their 2002 Cristal is silky yet vibrant, its layers of white peach, citrus zest, and subtle almond were underpinned by a chalky minerality that spoke of its grand cru origins. Critics hailed it as one of the finest Cristals ever made.

Earlier this year, all four of these legendary vintage Champagnes were served at the retirement party of Beth, a celebrated lawyer whose career at the same firm spanned more than four decades.

Her friend and partner, Susan, had quietly spent months working with her Wine Spectrum advisor to track down bottles that matched Beth’s greatest professional milestones:

  • 1983: the year she joined the firm as an intern
  • 1990: the year she was promoted to associate
  • 1996: the year she won her first major case
  • 2002: the year she became partner

These were not easy finds. In some vintages, only a handful of producers had declared Champagne, and even fewer bottles remained in pristine condition. Her advisor tapped deep industry connections, combed through private cellars, and secured each bottle with meticulous care.

Each cork pop marked a chapter in Beth’s journey, every toast a celebration of how far she had come and the perfect send-off into the chapters still to be written.
